Alaska Administrator Coaching Project
Our Mission
To positively influence student achievement and increase principal retention.
Our Beliefs
- We recognize that new principals are beginners in a complex and challenging profession. It is important to remember the multiple programs, processes and information they are expected to master.
- We take the long view. Individual professional development takes place in a supportive and collegial environment where principals can practice new skills and solicit feedback from colleagues and principal coaches.
- We instruct and facilitate with the belief that building assets (individual development) is more powerful than operating from a deficit model.
Our Definition of Instructional Leadership
Instructional Leadership is a combination of the beliefs and the actions necessary for shaping the culture of a school around teaching and learning, while recognizing the various interests in public education. (Whiteley, 2008)
We Utilize Five Major Components:
- Coaching: A two year relationship with a coach utilizing Cognitive Coaching strategies
- Cohort structures: Developing and deepening relationships with colleagues
- Curricular Coherence and Relevance: The processes and products used during Institutes have a direct and immediate application (“Take and Bake” materials)
- Performance Learning (rehearsals): It is more intensive than problem-based learning strategies. We utilize the interpersonal skills that we demonstrate and allow the participants to practice.
- Research-based content focused on leadership, teaching, and learning.
Considerations That Focus the Work of an Instructional Leader:
- Schools exist to serve students
- Good teaching practices are modeled, encouraged, nurtured, and supported
The Instructional Leader is responsible for ensuring that these considerations are in place.
